When to have a massage
Techniques Used

Initially an assessment is carried out of an individuals posture and their range of movement to properly identify the areas to be addressed.

A full range of techniques are used in all treatments, the following gives details of these.

 General Massage Techniques

  • Effleurage. Strokes that can be applied to the muscles either superficially or deep and can be applied either along or across the muscle fibres. Detects anomolies, improves circulation, warms up the muscles and can start to break down adhesions.
  • Petrissage.  A kneading action which improves circulation and loosens and softens the tissues.
  • Friction. Pressure applied to adhesions or scar tissue to break this down.

Soft Tissue Manipulation

  • Soft Tissue Release. Effective where there is localised adhesions or scar tissue as this releases the tension.  A lock is achieved on the muscle in the area of the tension, the muscle is then extended either by the client or the therapist. This stretches the muscle fibres in this particular area.
  • Neuromuscular Technique.  An injury or stress can cause the tissues of the body to tighten up, sometimes as a protection mechanism. In some cases, this tension remains and becomes the natural state of the muscles. Over a period of time the situation, if left untreated may worsen. NMT applies pressure to the area of tension for up to 90 seconds at a time, on the release of the pressure, the area will relax and may lose some of the original tightness.
  • Muscle Energy Technique. MET is a technique, which, through the relaxation and contraction of opposing muscles and an application of pressure by the client, stretching of muscles  and an increased range of movement occurs.
