Should you receive Bruising in a Sports Massage?

This has become a frequently raised concern.  Whether bruising is a normal part of receiving a Sports Massage?

The short answer is no!

Bruising occurs when tissue has been damaged. Blood vessels have been broken and blood has leaked into the surrounding area, causing the familiar discolouration.

An appropriately trained Sport and Remedial Massage Therapist will gently massage soft tissue, and as it becomes softer and more pliable, gradually work deeper and deeper into the tissue accessing any problem areas of scar tissue. This ensures that no further damage is caused, and helps to keep discomfort to a minimum.  Bruising and excessive discomfort and pain occur when this process has not been carried out properly, and the therapist is then breaking through tight tissue, causing damage and unnecessary pain.   It is therefore not always true that the more painful it is, the better the treatment.
