Migraine and Headache

The most common type of headache is the Tension Headache. This headache is felt as a tight band around the head, or just across the forehead and possibly on one side. It may last for a few hours or could last for days.

It is caused by anything which causes the muscles in the jaw, scalp, neck and/or shoulders to tense up, which is why it may be possible to reduce or eliminate the headaches through massage.

The very long list of possible causes:

  • Tiredness,
  • Stress and anxiety,
  • Emotional tension
  • Postural problems
  • Long hours over a computer
  • Too many or too few pillows.
  • Teeth grinding
  • Too much caffeine or alcohol
  • Hunger, e.g. too long between meals
  • Not enough water
  • Eye strain
  • Bright sunlight or extremes of temperature

If you are experiencing any of the above, or already suffer from headaches, then a regular massage of the tempormandibular joint (jaw!), head, neck and shoulders will help to prevent or reduce the tightening of the muscles, and so may either reduce the headaches or even stop them completely.

It is also worth looking at other preventative measures. Some are obvious such as a reduction in caffeine or alcohol with more regular meals. But other things such as practising Mindfulness, may help to reduse stress and anxiety.

Other headaches, such as migraines, which may be caused by diet, hormones etc.  may benefit from massage if the headaches themselves, or even the anticipation of the headache causes tightening of the muscles though stress and anxiety. In this case a cautious approach is needed to ensure that you do not aggravate the migraine/headache.
